I hold master’s degrees in History and Economics from KU Leuven, and a master’s in Political Economy from the London School of Economics. Before entering academia, I completed a Blue Book traineeship at the European Commission (DG Internal Market) and worked at the Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA), followed by roles at BNP Paribas and in private banking.
I received my PhD from Utrecht University in 2022 and subsequently held postdoctoral positions at the Paris School of Economics and the University of Groningen. I am currently an Assistant Professor of Economic History at the University of Groningen, where I obtained tenure in September 2024.
In June 2024, I was awarded an NWO Veni grant (€320,000) to study how the benefits of colonialism were distributed within colonizing nations. In May 2024, I was awarded an FWO Junior Postdoctoral Grant (approx. €250,000), which I later declined due to incompatibility with the Veni. Most recently, together with a team of close colleagues from Utrecht University, Maastricht University, and the University of Antwerp, I received Open eScience funding (up to €500,000).
I am a Fellow of the World Inequality Database (WID) and The Center for Advanced Studies “Finance and Inequality” (CASFI).
